My only complaint is the pads and headband get oily on the Sony's.įirst, a big thanks to the community for the amazing response toward the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX. Right now I actually find the Sony's to be the most comfortable to wear. I definitely want something for long sessions. I'm looking into getting the newer model of the 500 series Sennheiser or even the 598SR which has the headband of the 598CS but the earcups of the original 598. Otherwise the Sennheiser is much better for those who love classic rock, jazz, blues, classical, movie scores. If you're one who loves bass heavy music like rap, r&b, hip-hop, EDM or pop than the Sony's are for you. But they are certainly the more "fun" sounding headphone. Detail and imaging and soundstage is the best on the 598 but the 558 come very close.Īs for the Sony's they are definitely more bass heavy than the Sennheisers but still have good clarity too. The volume of the 598CS is louder than the 558 and 598 when keeping the volume level the same on the AE D1. The 598CS just doesn't sound natural to me compared to the 558 and 598.

I find the bass better on the 558 and 598 both of which are open back. Even so they definitely sound very forward in the mids and highs which almost overtakes the bass. I won't say they sound bad as in many cases they sound really good. Describing the 598CS sound signature has been almost impossible for me. The 598 seems to have a bit more clarity than the 558. Those two have an almost identical sound signature with the 558 having just a touch more bass than the 598. The 598CS seems to be the most comfortable but has a very different sound signature compared to the 558 and 598. I'm not going to keep all the Sennheisers but I'm just trying to find the best for comfort and sound. The Sony's are closed back and not sure they even make an open back headphone. The 598CS is closed back while the other two Sennheisers are open back. All are going through an AudioEngine D1 DAC/Amp coming off my rMBP. From the top down they are the Sennheiser 598CS, 558, 598, and Sony MDR-10rbt.
